While there is no doubt that using an aluminium cleaner helps make your trucks look spotless, it’s not all good, in fact you should think of it as a “now and again” chemical, rather than use it everytime you wash your trucks.
Here are some PROS and CONS:
- Removes oxidation, dirt and grime from aluminium and steel
- Helps dissolve hard to remove caked on grime
- Makes vehicles look temporarily bright and shiny
- Eats away at paint, making it dull over time
- Pits glass damaging windshields and windows
- Harsh chemicals are hard on the environment
- Burns stainless steel making it turn purple or black
When washing your fleet of trucks, your washbay should not use aluminium cleaner as a standard practice, but rather as a supplement to a routine wash.
When used, it should only be used sparingly and only on parts of the truck and definitely not on the entire truck.
Many company’s will use aluminium cleaner all the time on the entire truck, because it’s easier! When you use aluminium cleaner, you don’t have to scrub because the chemical eats away the dirt. But as it is eating away at the dirt, so too it is eating away at the finish on the trucks.
At MaPa, we recommend you wash the aluminium on your trucks, with a brush, by hand. Most dirt and grime can easily be removed this way. To give your fleet of trucks that extra shiny appearance, we suggest using aluminium cleaner periodically, every other time on a bi-monthly cleaning basis, or every 4th wash on the truck. And only sparingly on the surfaces that need it and will benefit from its use, for example: wheels, cat walk, fuel tanks, and other areas that might need it.
The bottom line: there is just no substituition for old fashioned elbow grease. Taking shortcuts to remove dirt and grease may give you the immediate result your looking for, but in the long term, routine use of aluminium cleaner will prove to be harmful to your fleet and the environment.
